Introduction

This article will show steps on how to install CentOS 8. The installation process is in a VirtualBox application running in Microsoft Windows 10. Actually, the process consists of several parts. The first part is actually a part for configuring the VirtualBox so that the installation of the CentOS 8 will be possible. The second part is the part for adding the image boot file for the installation. The last part is the main part for displaying the CentOS 8 installation procss. So, the following are the steps to achieve that :

 

VirtualBox Preparation for CentOS 8 Installation

1. First of all, run the VirtualBox application. If the VirtualBox application exist, the following display will appear :

2. Click the button New in the top part of the VirtualBox application. The following dialog box for creating a new Virtual Server will appear :

3. Just fill the ‘Name:’ with any kind of name as shown in the above dialog box. But consider that the name need to indicate the operating system or server running on that Virtual Machine. Later on, it will be easy to identify it. Select the ‘Type:’ of the operating system into Linux with the ‘Version:’ of Red Hat (64-bit). Consider that this is suitable for the CentOS Linux operating system. After configuring the entry accordingly, just click the Next button. The following image of the dialog box for further installation will appear :

4. By default, the size of the memory for recommendation is 1024 MB. So, change the value of the memory accordingly. The following is an example for changing the size of the memory into 2048 MB :

5. Click the Next button to continue on to the next step of the installation. The following image of dialog box installation will appear :

6. Click the Create button above, in order to create a new virtual hard disk. This is the only option for the first time when there is no virtual hard disk file available. The following image of dialog box will appear :

7. Click the Next button above to start moving to the next step after creating a new virtual hard disk file. The following image of dialog box installation will appear :

8. As shown in the information of the dialog box, Dynamically allocated will consume the required size and it will not take longer to create. Just select the ‘Dynamically allocated’ radio button option. After that, click the Next button and the following image of the dialog box will appear :

9. The above display will present the default size for the new virtual hard disk file. It is 8.00 GB and if it is not suitable, just change it accordingly as follows :

10. After the size number is suitable, just click the Create button. Then, the configuration of the VirtualBox for installing a new virtual server is done. The following image part of dialog box of VirtualBox will appear :

Configuring Bootable Image file for CentOS 8 Installation

The second part is the part for configuring the Virtual Server so that whenever it start, it will definitely activate the boot process for CentOS 8 installation. The following are steps to accomplish the purpose :

1.  Right click on the CentOS 8 Virtual Server. Just right click at the image appear on the previous part that has the label of the Virtual Server’s name. In this context, the label name is ‘CentOS-8’. After that, the following image of dialog box configuration will appear :

2. Click on the Storage tab, the following image will appear :

3. Click on the Disc image under the Controller : IDE. It exist in the Storage Device list. After clicking on it, the following image will appear :

4. Next step, just select the dropdown list of Optical Drive with the image of Disc as in the following image :

After that, click the OK button. Next after, right click the Virtual Server with the label of ‘CentOS-8’ and click the Start menu. The following image will appear :

Apparently, according the image above, the boot process is fail because it cannot detect the Secondary Drive for the bootable image installation of CentOS 8. So, just right click the dropdown list of Host Drive ‘D:’ as follows :

Seems that it is an impact because in the previous step, the check button is not active for selecting the Secondary Drive and then choose the correct image for booting the installation process of CentOS 8. Just click the Start button after as in the above image. The installation process of CentOS 8 will start right after.

 

 

CentOS 8 Installation Process

This part is the actual part of the installation. Those steps exist in the following sequence :

1.  Soon after the boot process as in the previous part start, the following image of the first step of the installation process will appear :

2. Just select the first option where the label is ‘Install CentOS Linux 8’ to start installing CentOS 8 in the Virtual Server. The following installation step will appear :

3. After the loading process for the installation of CentOS 8 is done, the following installation step image will appear :

4. Just select the suitable language as in the above installation step and then click the Continue button. After that, the following image of the installation step will appear :

5. In the above installation step, just click the Installation Destination. The following image of the CentOS 8 installation step will appear :

6. Make sure that there will be a check sign in the selected Local Standard Disks used as in the following image :

7. After that, click the Done button to finish the selection process of the Local Standard Disks. The following image displaying the CentOS installation step will appear :

This installation just use the Automatic Partitioning Scheme. In order to do the partitioning manually, please read another article containing that information. So, after the selection of the Local Standard Disks with the Automatic Partitioning Selection, just click the Begin Installation button. Soon after, the process will reach the following image showing the complete progress :

8. Create ‘root’ and another user account. Just select each of the area of the image. First of all, just click the area of ‘Root Password’ and then the following image will appear :

9. Just fill the field of the Root Password and then retype it in the field of Confirm. Make sure that each of the column has the same value password. After entering into both of the field, don’t forget to click the ‘Done’ button. The following image will appear :

10. If the password is considered as weak, just click the Done button again to confirm on using that password. So, the following image to continue on the installation process will appear :

11. After clicking the Done button twice, the following image to continue on the CentOS installation step will appear :

12. Select the area of the ‘User Creation’ if another user is needed. Soon after clicking the area of the image of ‘User Creation’, the following image of the CentOS installation step will appear :

13. Just fill the above column accordingly. The following is an example of another user creation :

14. Similar with the root’s password setting, if it is considered as a weak password, don’t forget to double click the ‘Done’ button as follows :

15. Soon after double clicking the ‘Done’ button, the following image will appear :

16. So, in order to finish the configuration for the installation process, just click the ‘Finish configuration’ button. The following image will appear :

17. Soon after, if there is no trouble at all, the installation process will be done and complete as the following image :

18. Click the Reboot button in order to complete the installation of CentOS 8 in the VirtualBox. Soon after the following image will appear :

19. As in the above image, actually the process is returning back to the first step of the CentOS 8 installation. It is because the primary main boot is from the CentOS image file. So, the solution is just to power it off as in the following image display :

20. Click the OK button to power off the Virtual Server. After that, remove the attachment of the image bootable file to install the CentOS 8. It is important so that it will not start or display the CentOS 8 installation menu again but on the other hand, it will display the main login page of the CentOS 8. The following is the process for removing it :

  1. Right click at the Virtual Server with the label ‘CentOS-8’ in this context. After that, choose the Storage menu. Select the bootable image and then select the Remove Attachment as in the above display. There will be a warning message as follows :

  1. Click the Remove button, so the following dialog box of the Virtual Server setting will appear :

  1. Click the OK button. Soon after that, do not forget to start the Virtual Server again. The following splash screen of the first boot screen of CentOS will appear :

  1. Just select the label with the name of CentOS Linux as shown above in the first line. After that, the following boot process will appear :

Finally, after the login page above appear, the installation of CentOS 8 in VirtualBox runs in Microsoft Windows 10 is done.

 

 

Login Testing to CentOS 8

For an additional process, do not forget to try to login to the operating system. Just insert the suitable account whether it is a root account or another account. If the login process is a success, the operating system will redirect from the login form to the bash line command prompt as follows :
